Boris Johnson said he hoped to secure a trade agreement with India by the autumn as he downplayed differences over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
He announced plans for an accelerated schedule to secure a deal during his first official visit to the country. The British government has previously said it wants a deal by the end of the year.
Johnson said that compared to the United Kingdom, India has historically had “very different relations” with Russia and “we need to reflect this reality.”
Narendra Modi, the Indian prime minister, is one of the few world leaders who has failed to criticize President Putin for invading Ukraine. India has deep ties with Russia in both energy and defense.
