Donald Trump said he had not left an interview with Pierce Morgan, instead claiming that the British TV presenter had misleadingly edited a video of their meeting to make a fuss about his new show.
A short clip released Wednesday to promote talkTV, the new television station owned by Rupert Murdoch, gave the impression that the former US president had left the interview with Morgan in anger at the strict line of questioning.
Murdoch-owned tabloids Sun and the New York Post ran news stories on the front page of the alleged breakup as part of a carefully planned global marketing strategy for Morgan’s new show, which kicks off on Monday.
The Trump team claims that the video was misleadingly edited to give the impression that Trump shouted “turn off the camera” as he got up from his chair in anger. An audio provided by Trump’s team to the American media suggests that the comment was in fact made after the couple exchanged courtesies at the end of the chat and was subsequently edited for dramatic effect.
Taylor Budovic, a Trump spokesman, said: “This is a pathetic attempt to use President Trump as a way to revive the career of a failed TV presenter.”
The interdependent relationship between Trump and Morgan has led to numerous interviews over the years, often generating headlines that keep both in the public eye.
The premise of Morgan’s new national show is that the host will be a fearless man who says things that are now impossible to say on national television. The promotional interviews for Piers Morgan Uncensored, which will earn the host tens of millions of pounds during his contract, showed that he repeatedly complained about a “culture of annulment” and compared “awakened” politics to fascism. Morgan’s personal approach to marketing the program involves fighting on Twitter with liberal or left-wing critics in hopes of provoking a backlash.
Part of Morgan’s interview with Trump did not go according to plan after an unknown person submitted a dossier with critical comments that Morgan made on the President of the United States in recent years.
In a surreal twist that shows the extent to which politics and the media are increasingly intertwined, the person responsible for the file appears to be former Ukip leader Nigel Farage. It hosts a rival evening show on the right-wing GB News channel and will compete with Morgan’s show for many of the same viewers.
In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Farage recalled visiting Mar-a-Lago days before the interview and told Trump that Morgan had “bragged in the UK media” that he was a friend of his. at the same time he “stitched” you.
Speaking on ITV’s Lorraine on Thursday morning, Morgan seemed pleased with Trump’s claim that the ad for the interview had been fraudulently edited.
Morgan, who was once fired as editor of the Daily Mirror for publishing fake photos, said: “He says this is a rigged election, and now he says I have a fake promotion. What I would say is watch the interview. Everything will be there. We will not make any duplicitous editing.
“The promotion reflects exactly what happened. Donald Trump was very angry about one particular thing and could not leave it. But when people see the interview, they will see that we have a good exchange. We’ve always done it before. But the anger he felt about what he said before we started the interview boiled over.
The presenter left Good Morning Britain on ITV last year after refusing to apologize for comments he made about Megan, Duchess of Sussex. He said he was not a right-winger, but a “rather frustrated liberal” who had been a victim of a culture of abolition.
In the end, the self-determined “narcissistically self-promoted” Morgan told the Lorraine show that he was pleased with Trump’s furious reaction to the interview because of the publicity he created: “I told my team the only way it could get bigger is , if I wake up in the morning with a personal statement from Donald J.
