All Quebecers can now get a free flu shot.
The government made the announcement on Friday, November 25, in a press release saying that “after consultation with public health authorities, the Ministry of Health and Social Services is providing the free flu vaccine to all Quebecers who wish to take advantage of it , from today.”
They add that this is “exclusive to this year and will be re-evaluated next year”.
The decision was made in the current context of the spread of a trio of viruses – COVID-19, the respiratory syncytial virus known as RSV, influenza – and “the high volume of traffic in our emergency departments”.
Quebec residents can head to Clic Santé to make an appointment. Several pharmacies and private clinics will also offer the flu shot service, and certain locations will also have walk-in services. “Unfortunately, people who have already been vaccinated will not be reinstated.”
Public health officials say it’s critical that people at higher risk get a shot as soon as possible, including: those over 60; all people with chronic diseases such as heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, immunosuppressed, etc.; pregnant women in the second and third trimester; people who live in the same household as the aforementioned people, as well as family caregivers.
The following groups are also encouraged to get vaccinated as soon as possible: families with children under six months and healthcare workers.
