BC Weather: Wind warning for South Coast, snow and winter storm warnings inland

Weather warnings, from wind along the South Coast to snow and wind inland and northeast, are in place for much of B.C.

Environment Canada issued the warnings on Saturday, saying an intense Pacific cold front will move inland from north to south late Saturday and overnight.

Alerts extend from the Lower Mainland to the Okanagan and north to the Peace River and Fort Nelson regions, with Environment Canada calling for varying amounts of snow inland.

Winter storm warnings are in place for mountain passes where up to 25cm is expected, and special weather statements have been issued for lower areas where less snow is expected.

The snow is expected to stop early Sunday as the frontal system moves out of the province.

“A band of heavy snow and strong northwesterly winds associated with the front will cause poor visibility for about two or three hours. Snowfall will reach 5cm in many areas, while higher ground could see up to 10cm.”

The National Weather Service says the cold front is expected to cross Prince George early Saturday night, 100 Mile House and Blue River later overnight, then Revelstoke and the southwest interior near midnight. Finally, it will reach the Kootenays after midnight.

As for mountain passes, Environment Canada says to consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve, as roads can be difficult to navigate and visibility can be reduced to near zero at times.

Highway 3 (Hope to Princeton, Polson’s Peak to Kootenay Pass)

  • Dangerous winter conditions are expected with heavy and blowing snow. 25 cm projected.

Highway 97 (Pine Pass)

  • Heavy snow and reduced visibility in blowing snow. 10-20 cm of snow, wind from 30 to 50 km/h.

In the northern half of the district, cooling is expected after the snowfall stops.

“As the weather system deviates, arctic air will begin to sweep into the region, causing plummeting temperatures and waves,” Environment Canada said.

“Sunday’s snow accumulation will only amount to a few inches, but is favored to fall on Highway 97 east of Pine Pass.”

Officials are reminding drivers to be prepared for winter driving and that drivers should carry emergency supplies when traveling, such as an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first aid kit and a flashlight.

Next week’s forecast for northern British Columbia will see temperatures go from a high of -2 C on Sunday to an overnight low of -13 C. From there, they’ll drop steadily, with Wednesday we see the highest value of about -20 C and at night lows of about -30 C.

For the Lower Mainland, Victoria and the southern Gulf Islands, temperatures will not be as cold, although strong winds are expected. The maximum temperature on Saturday will be around 9°C and will drop to 2°C overnight, along with steady rain.

“An intense Pacific cold front will move across the south coast tonight,” Environment Canada said. “The strongest winds will be pre-frontal southerly or southwesterly winds tonight, except late tonight and after midnight for Chilliwack and Hope.”

“Winds are strong enough to cause some power outages in the region. The highest gusts of 80 km/h are expected near the water and near Hope.

Winds are expected to ease overnight.

Sunday will see a 40 percent chance of showers with a mix of sun and clouds along with a high of 7 C. Monday’s forecast will see a high of 6 C with a mix of sun and clouds and a 40 percent chance of rain or snow overnight , as temperatures drop to 1 C.

However, periods of snow are possible from Tuesday to Friday, with highs around 5C and overnight lows falling below freezing.
