Boris Johnson will destroy every international leadership capital Britain has built since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine if it cancels post-Brexit trade agreements in Northern Ireland, European diplomats have warned.
The prime minister will face anger in both Washington and Brussels over his reported legislative plan, which will give ministers the power to suspend customs controls on goods entering Northern Ireland.
Senior European diplomatic sources warn that the move will play into Russia’s hands and undo the positive international role Britain has played in the Ukraine crisis.
“As the war in Ukraine enters a new phase, now is not the time to undermine Western unity just to play Tory’s backbanchers in Westminster or the DUP gallery in Belfast,” a source said.
