An internal battle plaguing Alberta’s ruling party has taken a new turn with one of Prime Minister Jason Kenny’s top political officials, comparing Kenny’s critics on the back bench to clowns.

Brian Rodgers, chief of staff to Infrastructure Minister Prasad Panda, responded on Twitter to a column in a newspaper that included renewed criticism of Kenny by some of his members of the United Conservative group.

Rodgers said in a tweet that the criticism came from “the same old team” and attached an image of spinning, gesturing clowns from the TV show The Simpsons.

Vice President Angela Pete, a critic of Kenny, responded to the blow by saying on Twitter that Rodgers’ comment illustrated the harassment, intimidation and ridicule directed by Kenny’s staff at anyone who did not respond.

Backbench MP Leila Ahir, who was removed from the cabinet last year after criticizing the prime minister, also joined the battle on social media, saying that omniscient leaders who behave in a corrupt manner must find a home outside the UCP .

The party is currently engaged in a postal vote to decide whether Kenny should remain as leader, a battle that has uncovered deep divisions and given oxygen to what Kenny calls the disturbing “soap opera.”
