The man was identified as Win Bruce of Boulder, Colorado, an MPD spokesman said Saturday.
Bruce was airlifted to a hospital in Washington, D.C., where he died, according to the department.
Supreme Court police, U.S. Capitol police and the MPD responded to the incident, which occurred Friday around 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
No one was injured in the incident, a Supreme Court spokesman said on Friday.
The area around the high court was closed on Friday for further investigation, according to a court spokesman. CNN noted on Saturday that the scene in Supreme Court Square has returned to normal.
The incident followed a series of recent chaotic events in the area.
At least four people were injured in a shooting in northwest Washington earlier Friday. The U.S. Capitol was evacuated on Wednesday after a warning of a “possible threat” after the Federal Aviation Administration failed to notify Capitol police of a parachute exhibition of Army Golden Knights at Nationals Park.
