It looks like Google is making a smartwatch.
In incredibly unsurprising news, 9to5Google Google announced that it had filed a trademark for Pixel Watch on Tuesday. The trademark application is freely available online, although there is not much to learn from it. Here’s what the page says about Google’s plans:
“The registration of the PIXEL WATCH trademark is intended to cover the categories of smart watches; Cases adapted for holding smart watches; Wearable computers in the nature of smart watches; smart watch straps; smart watch bands. “
Google has not yet officially announced any kind of smartwatch to add to its product portfolio, but the signs have been there for some time. 91 Mobile devices shared a visible display of the device showing its circular screen with a basic user interface showing the time and a step counter, just this week. It makes a lot of sense for Google to make its own Pixel watch, given that the company already does Wear the OS for third-party watchmakers to use in their own devices.
In other words, it’s like when Google decides to make its own Pixel smartphones after many years of maintaining and updating Android for other hardware companies to use in their own phones. Pixel phones have become quite excellent over the years, so if Google can reach that level of quality with the Pixel Watch, it could be a good alternative to Samsung Galaxy Watch.
With Google annual I / O event just around the corner on May 11, don’t be surprised if we see a Pixel Watch there.
