The parents of a British young child who went missing nearly 15 years ago welcomed the news this week that Portuguese authorities have officially announced a suspect in their daughter’s disappearance.
Kate and Gary McCann said the news reflected progress in the case of their missing 3-year-old daughter Madeleine, who went missing in the Algarve area of Portugal in May 2007 while the family was on holiday.
“We welcome the news that the Portuguese authorities have declared a German an ‘arguido’ in connection with the disappearance of our beloved daughter Madeleine,” McCanns said on the official Facebook page to find Madeleine this week.
Prosecutors in Faro, the Algarve’s capital, made Christian Bruckner an “arguido” on Thursday, but did not officially reveal his name, according to the BBC.

“It is important to note that Arguido has not yet been charged with any specific crime related to Madeleine’s disappearance,” McCanns said. “Although the possibility may be small, we have not lost hope that Madeleine is still alive and we will reunite with her.
German police have announced for the first time that they are investigating Bruckner in connection with Madeleine’s disappearance in 2020. He is currently serving a sentence in Germany on drug charges. He was also sentenced to seven years in prison for raping a 72-year-old woman near the same resort in Praia da Luz, where McCann disappeared.
Portuguese prosecutors traveled to Germany this week to uncover Bruckner about McCann’s disappearance. He declined to answer any questions, according to a report.
