Brazil celebrates the return of the carnival

Thousands flocked to the iconic Rio de Janeiro Sambadrome on Saturday for carnival celebrations after a two-year delay in the pandemic.

The best samba schools in Rio de Janeiro started doing things late on Friday, the first night of the two-day show.

Brazil confirmed its first cases of COVID-19 in mid-March 2020, just after the end of this year’s carnival. The 2021 edition was quickly canceled due to the rise of the Delta option.

“Those two years have been terrible. Now we can be happy again,” said Ketula Melo, a 38-year-old muse at the Empress Leopoldinense School, dressed as the Imanya deity of Afro-Brazilian religions on Friday night. She wore a candid black-and-white suit made of mussels.

Here’s a look at some of the dazzling celebrations this weekend.
