Response of major emergency services after a house fire

Police are investigating an alleged arson attack on a house in Newport. Emergency services were called to the Greenwood area on Saturday night.

Following a joint investigation by Gwent Police and the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, a police spokesman said “the cause of the fire is considered to be intentional”. The signal was raised at 23.05 and the crews were called to Beaufort Road, where the fire was quickly extinguished.

A 45-year-old man from Newport was arrested on suspicion of arson in order to endanger his life and remains in police custody. Chief Superintendent Tom Harding said: “Fortunately, no one was injured in the blaze, which was quickly put out by firefighters.

“Following the fire reports, our staff arrived quickly to reassure community members and begin our investigation. We arrested a man on suspicion of arson and he remains in police custody for questioning. As our investigation continues, Beaufort Road residents will see additional patrol officers, and we encourage you to speak directly with them if you have any concerns. “

Police are urging anyone with video surveillance footage or billboards that could help with the investigation to contact them. They also want to talk to anyone who has been in the area between 10.30pm and 11.30pm. Chief Supt Harding added: “We work closely with Newport City Homes, the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and other partners to ensure the safety of people living in the area. Anyone found to have intentionally started a fire that could result in the loss of human life and significant destruction and damage to human livelihood will be prosecuted. ”
