Kevin Campbell said he felt the referee had “bottled” the decision to give the former Everton team a penalty at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

With a 0-0 result, Anthony Gordon, who has been causing problems for Liverpool all afternoon, ran and fell after being transferred by Joel Matip.

Referee Stuart Atwell deflected the visitors’ protests and Liverpool continued to win 2-0 thanks to goals from Andy Robertson and Divok Origi, who scored his sixth goal in the Merseyside derby.

The former Everton striker Campbell said he believed the referee had “bottled” the decision not to award the penalty.

He told Sky Sports after the match: “This is a pen for me. It’s a push in the back. He’s in the box, it’s a push from behind. He is not close to the ball, he pushes it.

‘Do you see this. If it was at the other end, I’m sure this stadium would go crazy. This is the only breakthrough Everton needed, “he added.

“I thought the referee filled it a little, to be honest with you.”

Jamie Carragher warned Gordon to be “careful” in the future and not to gain a reputation as a fraud in the game.

“You have to be careful, Anthony Gordon,” he said. “He is a great boy and a great player, one of the best players on the field today, he created huge problems for Liverpool.”

“But he just has to be careful about that, this is not the first time, this one in the first half and it will definitely be in the minds of the referees,” he added.

Graham Sunes, as an expert with Campbell and Carragher, said Gordon’s first-half dive “planted a seed” of doubt in the referee’s head and could be counted on the player later.

“He planted nipples in the referee’s head in the first few minutes when he dived to try to get a penalty.

“You can bet that if we’re players there, we’re in the referee’s ear: ‘he’s a diver, a referee.’ You also plant a seed in the judge’s head.

Gordon, meanwhile, said after the game that he believed Everton “could” have a penalty, but “sometimes these things go against you.”

He told Sky Sports: “I thought we could have a penalty, but sometimes they are against you, and football is like that at times.”

“The second one was the strongest for me because it stood on my feet. It is clear that I went 1 against 1 with him, I beat him and he stood on my feet, which caused me severe pain and I fell, “he added.

In the first appeal, for which he was convicted of diving, he admitted that it was not a clear penalty, but that there was “contact”, so he should not have been reprimanded for simulation.

He said: “First, I looked back. I felt the contact and got down.

“I can see from several angles why he didn’t give it, but it’s certainly not a yellow card because it’s not diving. There is contact.
