The usefulness of N-LAW on the battlefield and its abundant supply made the United Kingdom one of Ukraine’s most popular supporters and made Boris Johnson’s stock jump as they collapsed at home.
“Boris Johnson has become the new Winston Churchill for us,” Mr Filatov said. “I think he’s also pursuing his own goals at home – I understand that – but we have to admit that he’s our best friend right now.”
Mr Filatov – who occasionally travels to London to attend Christie’s art auctions and whose daughter studied in the UK – says his worldview is Western, even if his legacy is Russian.
“I am Russian, my parents are ethnic Russians, I am a member of the Russian Orthodox Church, my wife is Russian, my mother was a teacher of Russian literature,” he said. “They can’t understand how people like me can resist their influence.
Invasion resistance
Instead, Mr Filatov said the Russian invasion had prompted most Russian-speaking Ukrainians to oppose the Kremlin’s “special military operation” to “denationalize” Ukraine.
“Can a normal person share his values?” He asked rhetorically. “If you live in a free country like here and breathe free air, you can’t understand how they can have all this nonsense in their head like Putin and accept this propaganda.
Instead, Mr Filatov said he was fighting for Western values. “The values we defend include democratic elections, freedom of the press, freedom of speech and LGBT rights.
