Boris Johnson is facing a backlash from the cabinet over Jacob Reese-Mogh’s Dickensian plans to force government officials back into the office.

Reese-Mogg suggested that government officials could lose extra pay in the form of a “London weigh-in allowance” unless they return to their desks.

The Brexit opportunity minister, whose information includes government effectiveness, visited Whitehall offices to assess employment levels. He left notes in Whitehall’s workspace with the message: “I’m sorry you were out when I visited him. I look forward to seeing you in the office very soon. ”

On Tuesday, he made a presentation to the cabinet, including a league table highlighting the departments where the fewest employees have returned to work.
