NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Coast Guard stopped searching Sunday for three missing children near the Crescent City Connection Bridge in New Orleans.

A 15-year-old man, a 14-year-old woman and an 8-year-old woman, who were last seen entering the water on Saturday night just before sunset, have disappeared.

“The decision to stop any search and rescue case is never easy, but given the extensive efforts to search for our men and women from the Coast Guard, together with other response agencies, I made the difficult decision to stop our active search for the three children, “said Captain Kelly Denning, commander of the New Orleans Coast Guard. “Our prayers are with families during this difficult time.”

WDSU-TV reported that when the Coast Guard began searching for children in the evening, the New Orleans Regional Transit Service stopped servicing its ferry on Algeria-Canal Street, hoping to clear the search area. The service remained suspended until Sunday morning.

Rescue crews, including police and firefighters in New Orleans, searched more than 93 miles on the Mississippi River for a total of 55 hours.
