Several fire engines are on the scene of a major fire in an industrial area in Devon. An explosion could be heard Monday night (April 25th) as flames tore through the roof of a block at Totnes Industrial Estate.
There are about six fire engines from the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, as well as police. An eyewitness at the scene said the affected business was Tideford Organic Foods: “An explosion was heard when the flames tore the roof of a warehouse. Police and firefighters arrived on the scene around 8:15 p.m. Crowds have gathered, but the air is thick with fierce smoke coming from the roof of the building. Firefighters extinguished the flames and sprayed hoses on both sides of the building. Police are clearing observers of the area amid fears of plastic fumes. “
A woman who worked there said, “I smelled it all night. It smelled of burning wax. I thought it came from the fly. Suddenly I really smelled it. Fortunately, one of the boys had just come in and out of the bathroom. He turned and said, damn it, it’s burning. Go away!”
Eyewitness photos and videos show flames and large streams of black smoke. The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service contacted us for more details.
