Norfolk General Hospital in Simko is battling a new outbreak of COVID-19.
In an email Saturday afternoon, the hospital said nine patients on the third-floor medical / surgical unit tested positive for the virus.
Patients isolate themselves and visits are limited to approved primary care providers.
This outbreak comes two weeks after five patients in the hospital’s comprehensive care unit tested positive for COVID-19.
The latest hospital outbreak is one of seven reported by Haldimand-Norfolk Health, a list that includes two long-term care homes, a farm and four unspecified collection points.
An update from the health ward on Monday hospitalized 11 residents of Haldimand-Norfolk with COVID-19, two of whom are in the intensive care unit.
On Friday, Norfolk General announced the closure of its COVID-19 test center, which has been the site of community PCR testing since its opening in October 2020.
The hospital said it had processed 19,635 tests for COVID-19 during the center’s 18 months of operation.
In Haldimand-Norfolk, residents eligible for the PCR test are now limited to Roulston Pharmacy in Simcoe and West Haldimand General Hospital in Hagersville.
Norfolk General’s COVID-19 Vaccination Center remains open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Slightly more than 18% of the population in Haldimand-Norfolk did not receive any dose of COVID-19 vaccine, compared to 14.1% in the province as a whole.
After a sharp drop in local weekly vaccinations from more than 7,600 in early January to 191 in the week of March 28, 706 and 1,900 doses were administered in the first two weeks of April, respectively.
