James Happy, the armed forces minister, said he believed there was “every opportunity” for Ukrainian forces to defeat Russia as the focus of the conflict shifted to the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine.
Asked by Sky News if it was “inevitable” for Russia to take over, Mr Happy said: “I don’t think there is an inevitability at all.
“I think the last time I had the privilege of speaking on behalf of the government in the morning was two or three weeks ago, and then we were thinking about how inevitable the demise of Mariupol might be, and yet those fighters in Mariupol are defending it so heroically. continue three weeks later and absorb a huge amount of Russian combat power while this defense continues.
“So I think what we’re going to see in Donbass is a very different type of conflict than the one we saw around Kyiv.
“I think we will see a conflict between two forces that are much more evenly balanced, where the Ukrainians have the advantage of defensive positions that have been dug and prepared over the last eight years, and that will make it extremely difficult to crack the Russians.
“And I think that with all the support that Ukrainians receive from all over the world, there is every chance that Ukrainians will be able to send them.
