A 16-year-old boy who was stabbed in the library of his school south of Edmonton was attacked over a $ 10 dispute, his mother told CTV News Edmonton.
He was airlifted to Stollery Children’s Hospital on Monday after being injured at Pigeon Lake Regional School. He was hospitalized Tuesday in an induced coma.
The victim’s mother said her son was stabbed in the stomach just above the pelvis.
Both the victim and his mother cannot be identified, as he and his alleged attacker, a fellow student, are minors.
The RCMP announced charges of attempted murder and assault on the 16-year-old on Tuesday. He is on bail and is due to appear in court on June 1.
“Investigators are interviewing everyone in connection with the incident to find out exactly why and how he brought a knife to school, as well as what his motives were and what exactly happened.” said Troy Savinkov.
The boy was arrested at the high school without any more incidents, confirmed the RCMP.
The accused was known to the victim and his mother once hired him, she told CTV News Edmonton.
‘IN HIGH FUTURE’: DEBT
The stabbing follows the murder of 16-year-old Karanvir Sahota, who died from stab wounds he received outside his school in Edmonton on April 8.
In January, 16-year-old Wesley Anderson was attacked by two other students at HJ Cody High School. He was pushed to the ground and trampled on his head, he told CTV News about the beating, which was filmed on video.
“As a parent, this catches your eye, but is there an increase (violence in high school)? I don’t know if I would say that, I certainly haven’t seen it,” Savinkov said.
Officials and students witnessed the stabbing, Wetaskiwin Regional Head of Schools Peter Barron confirmed on Monday.
Counselors will be in the Pigeon Lake area to support students, and a meeting with parents is scheduled for this week.
“We believe that we are on high alert, in the sense that all our staff monitors the behavior of all our students and staff, which may differ from their initial behavior,” Barron explained.
“We ask all our employees to be aware of this, to bring this to the attention of the administration, if necessary, to intervene.
The school is located near the Falun community, which is about 80 kilometers south of Edmonton.
