NFL Draft 2022: What the Last Decade Says About Quarterback Raises, Plus Some Trading Hypotheses

The NFL 2022 draft lacks the quarterback intrigue that last year’s cycle brought. Reason points out that at least one quarterback will be taken in the first round, but it would be a surprise if more than three get into Day 1.

In the event that Steelers or another team wants to trade, CBS Sports looks back at previous deals to suggest what might be needed to make it easier to move to the quarterback. The point differentials were determined by the trading value chart arranged by RJ White on SportsLine.

In the last 11 drafts, 31 quarterbacks were taken in the first round and there was an average of one trade up each year to take a quarterback in the top half of the round.

In each of the 12 deals, the quarterback’s trading team received more compensation than the equivalence of the choice. On average, the team trading with the higher selection received a difference of +211,799 points, which is equivalent to the overall selection № 23. The teams trading down last year received above market value. The cost of moving up this year could be lower with a supposedly shallower set of talent.

If the quarterback continued to be successful, it was all worth it. Kansas City lost zero sleep, getting the “worst” end of the deal, according to the trade value chart, but still got Mahomes. The retrospective is 20/20 in some cases when future elections are traded. This is essentially a loan from the success of the team. Some loans are outstanding, while others are repaid early. In three of the 12 exchanges, the team that rises to take the quarterback sent back the top 5 in the next draft.

What does this mean for this year’s trade market?

To explore some hypothetical situations, let’s use New York’s overall selection № 7 to build some commercial offers. In this scenario, Carolina will still get her choice of litter number 6 overall if she chooses to go quarterback. Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said Monday that the team has been investigating deals up and down the board and has explicitly mentioned number 7 as a whole. It is known that the Giants would like to go out of one of the elections to acquire a future capital project, due to lack of sufficient space for a salary cap in 2021.

If future assets are included, then the trading team must surrender more due to the unknown. An NFL team will not risk looking bad to gain a future first-round pick, which could become number 32 overall when the trade value chart shows that they should have received a total equivalent of No. 16 in return. By inflating the price there is a bigger window to make it look like they have won the deal.

Steelers receive: 7 overall. Giants receive: 20 in total, 2023 selection in the first round, 2024 in the third round of the pickpoint differential: Giants + 123.38 * Based on the selection of 16th place in each future round

Saints receive: total number 7. Giants receive: total number 16, total number 19, difference in points: giants +83.82

If the team’s target quarterback is still available after No. 6 overall, they may be able to wait and exchange in their early teens, just like Chicago last year for Justin Fields. Let’s use Houston at number 13 in general to build these hypothetical deals:

Steelers receive: No. 13 in general, no. 108 in general.

Saints receive: Total 13. Texas receive: Total 16, 2023 second round, difference in selection points: Texas + 67.21 * Based on election 16th place in each future round
