Boris Johnson declined to apologize after it became clear that a Tory MP who was harassing a 15-year-old boy was advising the government on the sexual exploitation of children.
Imran Ahmad Khan, then a Wakefield Conservative MP, was sitting in an expert group backed by the Interior Ministry in December 2020, a year after his victim said he had complained to the Conservative Party.
Khan was expelled from the Conservatives after his conviction this year, and his constituency in Wakefield will receive a new MP in the by-elections.
Asked by Prime Minister Jeff Smith on Wednesday, the Labor MP from Manchester Wington said: “Last night we learned that the Home Secretary has put a member of Wakefield in an expert group offering advice on sexual exploitation.
“At the time, he was under police investigation on charges of assaulting a minor for whom he has since been found guilty.
“He was sitting in this panel long after the Conservative Party received a complaint from his victim.
“Isn’t the Prime Minister ashamed that his party did not take the victim seriously and did not put someone who is abusing a minor in such an important position and would like to take the opportunity to apologize to them?”
But Mr Johnson rejected the proposal and said: “I believe that the Home Office has already made a statement on this and if there are any further comments, they will make a statement.
Khan said earlier this month that he was appealing the sentence. He said he would officially resign as an MP, although by-elections may be postponed until June.
