With the onset of spring in Saskatchewan – something like – people are reminded to watch for ticks.

Most of the ticks found in Saskatchewan are American ticks that do not transmit Lyme disease to humans. Black-legged ticks, which can cause Lyme disease, are rare in the countryside, but can be introduced by migratory birds in early spring and remain active throughout the fall.

According to the Saskatchewan government, in 2021, 969 ticks were identified in Saskatchewan, and only 15 were black-legged ticks. Nine of them have been tested and none have had the bacterium that causes Lyme disease.

“People need to be vigilant and check for ticks on themselves, their children and their pets after they’ve been out,” Saskatchewan’s chief deputy health doctor, Dr. Julie Krizanowski, told reporters. “Taking precautions against ticks is the best way to reduce the risk of tick bites.”
