A grieving mother cried in court when her ex-boyfriend was sentenced to life in prison after admitting to killing her young son.
Hariar Ali, 34, was due to stand trial in Newry Crown on Wednesday for the murder of 11-month-old Hunter Patrick McGlyann.
But after legal discussions, defense attorney Charles McCreenor demanded that the murder charge be brought back against the Pakistani citizen.
With little Hunter’s mother, Nicole, and relatives sitting just a few feet away in the public gallery, many understandably in tears, Ali simply said “guilty” when a court clerk charged him.
After a last-minute confession, Judge McFarland told the killer that the law allows only one murder sentence, “and that’s life imprisonment.”
Detaining Ali back in custody, the judge adjourned the case to allow Hunter’s grieving family to make statements about the victim’s impact and probation, to finalize a report before sentencing the illegal immigrant and self-confessed killer.

Returning the case on June 15, Judge McFarland said that once he had received all the necessary reports, he would set the minimum wage that Ali had to spend in prison before he could even be considered for a license release.
While Ali, addressing Westenra Terrace in Monaghan, admitted to killing Hunter on November 26, 2019, the QC prosecution of Richard Weir has requested a second charge of causing actual bodily harm to the baby on an unknown date between November 24 and 27, to be left to the books.
None of the facts were heard in open court on Wednesday, but before that the court heard how Hunter died as a result of accidental injuries to the head and abdomen.
A prosecution lawyer told an earlier court that Ali cared for Hunter at a property in Kiddie while the boy’s mother was with relatives and that he died as a result of what was described as a “non-accidental” injury. the head.
Ali, who has been in a relationship with Hunter’s mother for about a year, claims the baby fell from a low couch and hit his head on a concrete floor, further claiming that he interviewed detectives, did CPR and gave Hunter a cold shower. to “revive” it.
In the morning, however, Ali said he noticed that the child’s lips were blue and he was not breathing, so he took him to the baby’s mother and told the Hunter family could not breathe and they rushed outside, but tragically he was dead.
“At no point did he call for medical help,” the earlier court heard.
