Ralph Rangnik questions Harry Maguire’s captaincy at Manchester United

Ralph Rangnik has recommended the votes of the Manchester United team who should be the captain of the club under the leadership of Eric ten Haag next season.

Harry Maguire’s status as captain has come under increasing pressure this season amid his disastrous form and some teammates have been unhappy with his privileges.

Six contract players will surely leave United, and a number of contract players are ready to leave as Ten Hag prepares to take over at the end of the season.

Maguire took over in January 2020 after Ashley Young joined Inter Milan, five months after the England international joined United from Leicester for £ 80 million, still a world record for a defender’s fee.

Rangnik actually said that Maguire should be re-elected next season: “I understand your question again, but again it doesn’t make sense, because we don’t know what players will be here, what the band will look like.

“I can only tell you what I did in the past when I was head coach or manager, because in Germany it’s called ‘Mannschaftskapitan’ – the team captain. I strongly believe that the captain should be chosen by the team, because he is called a team manager and we have always done that.

“We always had a board of four or five players – we called it Playground [players’ council] – selected by the players. The player with the most votes was captain of the team at the end. That’s what I did.

“I know a lot of head coaches don’t do it that way. I would do that if I stayed manager next season, but in the end I’m not. That’s something Eric will have to decide.”

Chelsea visit United on Thursday night, and Rangnik led the club for the last time at Old Trafford against Brentford on Monday. Rangnik’s five-and-a-half-month term was unsuccessful, with United eliminating the Champions League fourth round and Champions League quarter-finals before their recent relegation to the Premier League, leaving them sixth in the table.

“I think I’ve tried everything I can, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we’ve done everything right,” Rangnik admitted. “Everyone has to ask themselves, the staff, the players and myself, what could we have done better in the past?

“It’s part of our job. Everyone needs to be self-critical enough to do this. But as I said, until four or five weeks ago we still had every chance to qualify for the Champions League, but the results in the last four games were not as good as we had hoped. “
