People in Leeds shared their confusion after Leeds City Council accidentally distributed over 3 million pounds in an accident, which it now wants to get back.
An error in the processing of municipal tax payments means that around 25,000 people have received the double discount of £ 150 due to them. The Council is now seeking to reimburse the total of £ 3.75 million, which it did not have to pay.
In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the council said: “We are aware that a significant number (25,000) of municipal tax payments have been duplicated, meaning that some residents have received the payment twice.

“This is due to a process error in which the same payment file was incorrectly processed twice after it was initially rejected by the bank. We are working with our bank to recover duplicate payments so that the situation can be corrected as soon as possible.
“We would advise residents to check the relevant bills and keep in mind that duplicate payments will be refunded.
“We would like to apologize for the confusion or inconvenience caused by duplicate payments. Our staff is working hard to ensure that residents receive the £ 150 discount as soon as possible and that 120,000 payments have been made correctly. “
The post was flooded with comments from confused residents, many of whom said they had not yet received any payment. Rea Bea wrote: “Some people have received 2 payments, but I have not received one.”
McCreesh PJ agreed: “The first payment would be nice, it doesn’t matter the second.” And Holly Rooney added: “I didn’t even get my discount and it was due last week.”
One resident also said she received a double payment, but was not told how to return it when she asked. Helena Sykes said: “Today I received a duplicate payment and called to inform them, but they said they do not know how I can return the money, will it be collected automatically or will we receive a separate invoice and instructions on how to pay back?”
Among the confused answers were reports of shock and anger. Marian Ni Ruaid commented: “You are not processing anything properly.” Also seemingly unimpressed, John Turner wrote: “… and these people are responsible for our finances !!!”
