Danger! The winning streak of the champion Matea Roach reaches 17 matches

“Danger!” Champion Matea Roach has proven that she can conquer dozens of clues from a quiz with ease.

But in addition to showing superb buzzer skills, the phenomenon had to prepare for another challenge that could become more difficult with each victory: to come up with interesting anecdotes for each TV episode.

Such are the lesser-known consequences of the dominance of “Jeopardy!” Categories such as the 23-year-old.

Roach, who grew up in Halifax and now lives in Toronto, has the longest Canadian win streak with 17 wins and the eighth longest run in the history of the quiz.

“Danger!” champion champion Jen Jennings holds the record for 74 consecutive victories in 2004.

In Wednesday’s episode, Roach beat his closest competitor by just $ 1 after Final Jeopardy! round. Ben Hsia had exactly doubled the amount, and they both answered correctly to the last clue.

Roach’s total 17-day profit is now $ 396,182.

“It’s getting hard,” Roach said when he called on the day of her 13th episode.

“I didn’t watch Ken run like a child because I was five or six when it happened, but I’m sure he really scraped the bottom of the barrel to the end.”

These personal treats are usually presented after the first commercial break, when hosts Jennings or Maim Bialik offer each contestant a few minutes to tell the audience about themselves.

As long as she continues to win, she will need more stories.

Roach said her parents helped her generate material, but she has a strategy for deploying these personal treats for the best effect. When she first appeared, she gave the show “deliberately boring and general content.”

“I didn’t want to go on and play a game, and then my anecdote in that game is something that makes me feel bloated and tells a story about something that feels boastful,” she explained.

“But then after my first four shows we had a break in the recording and I remember sending an SMS to the producer who deals with the anecdotes of the contestants and I said to myself, ‘I have to give you better material. Because the things I sent you the first time are really boring. And I promise I’m more interesting than that. “

Roach said the show provided contestants with a list of questions prompting them to inspire stories. The first was for her most valuable possession – her father’s denim jacket from the 80’s.

By Tuesday’s game, Roach had raised a total of $ 368,981.

She also won a place in the show’s Champions Tournament, which is set to air in the fall.
