Another special weather announcement issued for Southern Manitoba

Another rainy weekend is forecast for southern Manitoba, Environment Canada reports.

A third major low-pressure system in as many weeks is expected to bring more rain to the region than Friday, the weather agency warned in a special weather statement Wednesday afternoon.

The system is expected to bring in between 20-50 millimeters of rain over the weekend, mostly in the form of rain, although there may be snow in parts of southwestern Manitoba with higher terrain.

The special weather forecast applies to the following communities:

  • Bisset – Victoria Beach – Nopiming prov. Park – Pine Falls.
  • Brandon – Nipava – Carbury – Trehern.
  • Brandon – Neepava – Carberi – Treherne Manitoba.
  • Winnipeg.
  • Dugald – Beausejour – Grand Beach.
  • Killarney – Pilot Mound – Manitou.
  • Melita – Boisevine – Turtle Mountain Provincial Park.
  • Minedosa – Riding Mountain National Park.
  • Morden – Winkler – Altona – Maurice.
  • Portage la Prairie – Headingley – Brunkild – Carman.
  • Selkirk – Gimli – Stone wall – Gori.
  • Sprague – a provincial forest on the northwest corner.
  • Ste. Rose – McCreery – Alonso – Gladstone.
  • Steinbach – St. Adolf – Emerson – Vita – Richer.
  • Virden – Suris.
  • Whiteshell – Lac du Bonnet – Pinawa.

Communities closest to the U.S. border are expected to see the most rainfall, Environment Canada said. However, unlike the last two storms, there is a chance that this system will remain entirely south of the US border.

Warmer temperatures on the road

If there is any good news from this, it is that this system is not expected to be so heavy, according to CBC meteorologist John Sauder.

Most communities are likely to see between 15-25 millimeters of rain by Sunday night and the winds will not be as intense, he said.

After the storm subsides, southern Manitoba will see double-digit temperatures next week, “so the weather is more stable and certainly warmer,” Sauder said.
