For the first time, the Statistical Office of Canada publishes census data on the number of transgender and non-binary Canadians, and Alberta is the fourth largest in the country.
In its 2021 data, the agency said 12,480 transgender and non-binary people aged 15 and over live in private households in Alberta.
Of this population, Lethbridge has the highest proportion of transgender and non-binary people of any community in Alberta.
There are approximately 400 trance and non-binary people in this city.
Advocacy groups such as the Lethbridge Pridefest Society say that while the data is encouraging, the numbers are likely to be lower than they should be.
Representatives say some people may still feel uncomfortable and insecure about going out, and everyone should work for an inclusive environment in which everyone feels safe and secure.
“Using inclusive language, respecting pronouns, respecting chosen names and justice, I think, above all, to have an open ear and always be committed to learning and researching what it takes sometimes to be a better friend (and ) a better ally, “said Lane Ster, president of the society.
Ontario has the highest rural population of transgender and non-binary people (39,450), followed by BC (18,330) and Quebec (16,225).
There are 100,815 transgender and non-binary people in Canada.
