Ralph Rangnik clarifies Manchester United’s advisory role amid Austria’s coaching proposal

Ralph Rangnik has confirmed that he will continue to be a consultant for Manchester United, despite his expected appointment as coach of the Austrian national team.

This became clear before the 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Thursday night. Rangnik is considering a proposal from the Austrian Football Association to take over before their League of Nations matches against Croatia, Denmark and France in June.

Rangnik will see his term as United’s interim manager, who has three games left this season and must remain as a two-year consultant.

The 63-year-old footballer refused to respond to reports about the role of Austria, but confirmed that he will fulfill his consulting contract with United.

“Tonight is our game against Chelsea and I don’t want to talk about anything else,” said Rangnik. “Please accept this and, please, ask questions about the match tonight.

“I said let’s talk about the game. What I can tell you and confirm is that I will definitely continue my advisory role at the end of the season for the next two years and I look forward to that.

“Eric and I didn’t talk, but we talked to the board about the content, the job profile, the content of this consulting role, we talked about it, so now I can confirm that I will definitely continue with that.”

Now United can finish the campaign in the Premier League with only a maximum of 64 points – the same amount they collected during the David Moyes season of 2013-14.

Marcos Alonso led Chelsea 1-0 in the hour, but Cristiano Ronaldo equalized with his 23rd goal for the club this term.

“We were lucky in the first half,” Rangnik said. “We needed great rescues from David [de Gea] again and some recent struggles.

“I thought we were better in the second half. We had more moments when we could control the ball, although we conceded a goal after 60 minutes, we showed a great reaction with an incredible assist from Nemanja [Matic] and a great finale by Cristiano.

“A game was open in the last 20 minutes, they could have scored and we were lucky when Reese James hit the crossbar. But we also had our moments. Cristiano could score one or two more goals.

“But in general, we have to admit that we were lucky to get this point. But the reaction we showed in the second half was good. There’s no reason to blame anyone for the attitude, but you see, we were far from controlling the game when Chelsea controlled the ball. “
