The Muslim Association of British Columbia says it is “seriously concerned” after an incident in front of a mosque in Surrey.

The association said in a letter shared on Twitter by the National Council of Canadian Muslims that a car driven by Ramadan worshipers leaving the evening prayers and the substance had been thrown by someone into the vehicle.

The letter from Thursday said that the car had moved away, but had returned, and repeatedly pretended to be trying to run over the crowd.

It says pretending to run over people is “no small matter” after a Muslim family in London, Ontario, was hit and killed by a truck last summer in a hate attack, police said.

The Muslim Association of British Columbia says its first priority is to ensure the safety of those gathered after the Surrey incident, and also calls on police to investigate it as a potential hate crime.

The RCMP did not respond immediately to a request for more information.

In a series of tweets, the National Muslim Council said it called on political leaders, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and British Columbia Prime Minister John Horgan, to give priority to challenging Islamophobia.

“Although some of our recommendations have been taken, many of the recommendations we made after the terrorist attack in London have not been implemented,” it said. “We need to do more. And we need to do it now.”
