Hammocks, trampolines and a great big slide: Vancouver’s newest park opens on Friday

Vancouver’s newest park is ready for visitors, and builders say its unique features will not only offer a space to relax, but will also create opportunities for Vancouver residents to come together and connect.

“It is a symbol of connection to each other, to the land and an opportunity to build further cooperation with host nations on education, programming and art,” said Stuart McKinnon, chairman of the park’s board.

Smith-Richards Park, on the corner of – you guessed it – Smith and Richards Streets, is the first park in the city center in more than 10 years. However, the name will not remain, according to project leader Alexander Man-Burden, and there are plans to give it a more formal, culturally appropriate title this summer.

About a third of the park is a playground and has two trampolines in the ground, towers and other climbing equipment and a swing. There are hammocks and seating for those who don’t feel so adventurous, and six “heavenly frames” that will be used to display public art on a rotating basis.

Man-Bourdon says they used the park’s design to prevent crime in the area. For example, a coffee vendor will be set up to monitor the area.

“After all, this is what we want, everyone who comes to the park feels safe and has a great experience,” he told CBC’s Margaret Gallagher during a tour of the space.

Emphasis was also placed on the greenery and sustainability of the park. One-third of the 0.8-acre area is covered with thousands of shrubs and other plants, many of which the city says are culturally significant to the first nations and are often used in food and medicine.

Rainwater collected in the park will be sent back to the city’s plumbing system to be used for irrigation, flushing toilets or for cleaning before entering the rainwater drain.

Ramps are installed for accessibility, and the playground has rubber flooring to absorb shocks and prevent slipping.

“This park demonstrates how to provide access to nature, leisure, health and community connectivity in a dense urban environment,” said Dave Hutch, director of park planning and development.

“It’s a place where people can live, work, socialize and play in their neighborhood. It’s about building community, creating whole neighborhoods, and we can’t wait for people to enjoy a whole new look at what a downtown park can be. “

The park will be open to visitors on Friday afternoon.
