A Labor source told the PA news agency it was a “real mistake”, while a spokesman said it had “no comparison” to the parties held at No. 10 and Whitehall.
He said: “Keir Starmer was at work, meeting with a local MP in his constituency office and attending an online Labor Party event.
“They stopped for food because the meeting was in the evening. No rules were broken.
“There’s just no comparison between standing in the kitchen and eating something between meetings, with lots of blatant rules breaking drink parties in the heart of the government, rejected by lies in the shipping box and leading to the queen’s apology.
“The incident is not currently being investigated”
In February, Durham police said they did not consider Sir Care’s actions to be a breach of the rules.
Sources told The Telegraph on Thursday that Sir Cair would not be fined even if he was found to have violated the blockade rules, as Durham police have a policy of not retrospectively taking action against Covid violators.
“Consistency must be key in Durham’s approach, and we will strive to ensure that everyone is treated in the same way according to the law,” a source said.
Following new calls for a reassessment of the event, a Durham police spokesman said on Thursday: “Earlier this year, Durham police reviewed videos recorded in Durham on April 30, 2021.
“We have stated that we do not believe that a breach has been identified in relation to the legislation and guidelines that were in force at the time of the shooting and therefore we will not take any further action on this issue.
“Since then, we have received a number of additional messages related to this issue, and we will now look at the content of these messages and respond in a timely manner.
“For clarity, Durham police are not currently investigating the incident.”
