PLANO, Texas – Since its launch in 2019, GR Supra has captured the spirit of TOYOTA GAZOO Racing – one that is associated with driving pleasure. For 2023, it adds another dynamic element: a six-speed intelligent manual transmission (iMT), as well as a readjustment of the brake and suspension control systems.
Adjusted for traction, stability and agility
The clutch and braking of the GR Supra are optimized for manual transmission operation.
With the automatic system, it is possible to use second gear when starting up when the opposite wheels are on surfaces with different levels of traction – for example, when the car is parked on a partially icy road, the progress is smooth without rolling back or sliding the wheels. With a manual transmission, first gear must be used and releasing the clutch carries a greater risk of turning the wheel. To deal with the problem, Toyota engineers have set up the car’s traction control system (TRAC) to achieve smooth operation like automatic. The system is also optimized for GR Supra’s high engine torque, wide tires and rear-wheel drive.
The car’s cornering behavior is a key element in the “Fun to Drive” quality that Toyota has developed for the GR Supra. For the new manual version, traction control was again the focus to ensure the perfect balance between agility and stability when exiting the throttle. The TRAC intervention is calibrated to maintain stability – so that the car adheres correctly to the driver’s line – while allowing the right amount of power for a sporty experience.
The ambition to make the GR Supra fun to drive in the most demanding scenarios helped inspire the introduction of a new Hairpin + feature. This is designed to allow more freedom and reward when taking narrow bends on an uphill slope (more than 5 percent) with high-friction pavement. Higher idle speed can make such routes more enjoyable to drive, so Toyota has optimized engine torque control to allow a greater difference in the degree of rotation of the wheels on the left and right sides of the tires. .
To counteract the possibility of excessive turning with “detachment” – something that can be difficult to control only with vehicle stability control (VSC) – an anti-rollback program (ARP) has been adopted for both manual and the automatic version of the GR Supra car. This intervenes at an earlier time with the VSC to cover any sudden loss of traction when using the car’s high-response suspension setting.
In addition, the Track mode is set to allow easy drift with free throttle control. The car remains agile, but has less risk of turning due to the specific control of the engine and torque. To see the full message, click HERE
