CBC News is expanding its local coverage by hiring 14 journalists in different regions of the country to strengthen community ties.
“On Canadian public television, the local is the lens of everything we do,” said Susan Margetti, general manager of CBC News, Current Affairs & Local, in a press release. “Giving priority to local connections will help us tell more of the stories that matter most to people.”
The network will expand its CBC local unit, adding journalists in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. A position for a local journalist will also become permanent in Quebec, and two new positions will be created in Iqaluit to support indigenous language programming.
The enlargement will also lead to employment in several smaller communities across the country.
Two video journalists will be hired in British Columbia – one based in Cranbrook, the other in Nanaimo – while two more Alberta-based journalists will also be added, one in Lethbridge and the other in the Grand Prairie.
Two new permanent reporters will be hired in Ontario, in Brampton and Kingston, while a community producer will work from the London office to build connections and increase coverage in southwestern Ontario.
The regions of Quebec and Atlantic Canada will receive each new community reporter to focus specifically on stories from traditionally underserved communities.
“These newly announced positions across the country are aimed at expanding and deepening our journalism, while building relationships with regional and cultural communities,” Margetti said.
The hiring of the new positions will start in the coming weeks.
