Channel 4 announced an additional, extended episode of Derry Girls.
The special edition will be broadcast later that week as the series 3 finale, which is scheduled to air on May 17 at 9 p.m.
Entitled The Agreement, it begins one year after the end of Series 3 and focuses on the Good Friday Referendum referendum, which brought widespread peace and stability to Northern Ireland after decades of bloodshed.
Channel 4 explains: “For this special part, we return to Derry a year later as the band prepares for their final school year. This is the week of the referendum on Good Friday Agreement and its time could not be worse than the most important of the year, the joint party for the 18th birthday of Erin and Orla, threatens to be overshadowed. As the family tries to figure out the possible results of the vote, the gang realizes they may not be ready for the future. “
Lisa McGee, a native of Derry / Londonderry and author of the hit sitcom, says:
Like all the best bands of the 90’s, I couldn’t resist ending our farewell tour with an encore for our loyal fans. I’m glad to say that we will be back for an extended special program – broadcast in the same week as our last episode. The special deals with the historic and important vote on the Good Friday Agreement, which coincides with the gang’s coming of age, are entering adulthood just as Northern Ireland is embarking on a new future.
I am so proud of this show and our amazing cast and crew and everything we have achieved in the last 5 years. What a trip it was. I’m so grateful that Channel 4 gave me space to finish the stories of these characters who mean so much to me with this special film. I really hope the fans like it as much as I do.
The people of Derry are not good at saying goodbye, so instead I will use one of our native expressions, “We’re far away.”

The exact transmission slot for the special edition is expected to be confirmed next week. Meanwhile, all three Derry Girls series are currently available for viewing on the All 4 streaming / catching platform, while Series 3 continues airing on Tuesday at 9 p.m.
