Manchester United have confirmed that Eric ten Haag will be their next permanent manager and will sign a three-year contract with an option to extend for another year. Now the focus will be on who the club will sign on the transfer market to begin the recovery with the Dutch manager.
Many positions will have to be targeted, but the only position the club has desperately needed to address for more than a season is in the defensive midfield. Nemanja Matic is the club’s only natural defensive midfielder and he has announced he will leave United with a free transfer at the end of the season.
A number of players have been linked with the move to Old Trafford. Declan Rice is of interest, but will probably be paid off by West Ham United. Many fans dropped the name of one player in the ring to replace Matic, Aurelien Chuameni.

Chuameni was impressive both in the domestic market and in Europe for Monaco this season and attracted the attention of a number of the best European clubs. Chelsea, Real Madrid and United are linked to this move, and given that Ten Hague wants physical and intelligent standard Champions League players, the 22-year-old French midfielder would meet the bill.
However, a wrench may be in the works, as The Times reported that Liverpool are seriously interested in signing Chuameni and given that they have football in the Champions League, this may be difficult to sell to United. This may mean that the club will have to look for other goals.
Some United fans are not yet ready to give up Chuameni, while others expect Liverpool to secure the French midfielder. Here is a selection of responses from Twitter:
