A woman injured in a severe fall in Banff National Park was transported by air to Calgary Futhills Medical Center in critical condition, EMS confirmed on Friday.
The crash occurred in the Grand Daddy Couloir area just off Highway 93 around 10:50 a.m., EMS spokesman Stuart Brido said.
The Grand Daddy Couloir is a steep, narrow gorge on Bow Peak, often used by skiers looking for a challenge.
The woman, who is in her late 20s, was with a group of skiers who were planning to go up and then down, Brido said.
“There was an accident in which she lost control of herself and eventually went down the slope quite a distance.”
Park officials were able to help the injured woman be taken to a nearby parking lot at the Mosquito Creek Hostel, where an ambulance picked her up.
He then met with the STARS air ambulance team at a helicopter pad in Lake Louise.
The woman was then taken by helicopter to a hospital in Calgary.
“[The incident] it is seemingly random. However, it was quite a significant fall down a steep slope, “Brido said.
