Internal Health, recognized national immunization awareness week

Internal Health encourages families to stay up to date with immunizations as National Immunization Week ends.

Thanks to global efforts, vaccines are available to protect against diseases such as chickenpox, influenza and others.

Vaccines are offered to children aged two, four, six, 12 and 18 months in BC. The vaccination process continues when the children grow up and start school.

In sixth grade, all children can receive the HPV vaccine to protect themselves from being infected with the human papillomavirus, which causes certain cancers. These include cancers of the cervix and mouth.

A 2019 study showed that the HPV vaccine reduced the incidence of precervical cancer in BC by more than half.

In a press release, Dr. Carol Fenton, an internal medicine official, said that “the covid-19 pandemic reminded us of how effective vaccines are in preventing serious illness and death.”
