Holiday festivities at the end of the school year were muffled by a tragedy at Canada’s Royal Military College as students and staff mourned the loss of four on Saturday.

Officer cadets Jack Hogarth, Andrei Honchiu, Broden Murphy and Andres Salek, all ready to graduate, died early Friday morning when their car sank in the lake that surrounds the campus in Kingston, Ont.
The students had to continue on the last day of Saturday with the incident hanging over their heads, but said they had tried to focus on the task at hand.
“It really was, ‘Keep your head down and try to do your best under the circumstances,'” second-year student Aiden Rob-Craig said after finishing his final exam.

As the RMC closed the main campus for the weekend to outsiders, students leaving the final exams in a neighboring building were silent, with some saying they were likely to postpone their celebrations until the end of the term due to the incident.

Two makeshift memorials have sprung up on campus, one next to a gazebo near one of the residences and the other at the scene, RMC spokesman Jonathan Farlam said.

On the other side of the bay in downtown Kingston, community members expressed concern over the news.
“I was shocked to hear about it, it was the last place something like that would happen,” Ben Doherty said.
“It’s a tragedy, they were just ready to leave.”
Hogarth was engaged in military and strategic research and hoped to be an officer in an armored regiment, according to the Ministry of Defense. Honciu was studying business administration and was planning to become a logistics officer.

Murphy, also a business administration student, worked to become a space environment controller. Salek, a student of military and strategic research, also wanted to be an armored officer.
The National Defense has released little details about the fatal incident, saying only that four people died after the only car entered Lake Ontario at Point Frederick on campus around 2 a.m. Friday morning. An investigation is ongoing.
A national defense spokeswoman said details of each memorial service would be communicated at the discretion and discretion of the victims’ families.
