The provincial Special Investigations Department is investigating an incident in Belleville in which an officer fired a less lethal rifle.
SIU reports that preliminary information suggests that police in Belleville were sent in a domestic incident at a Pine Street residence around 6 a.m. Saturday.
When police arrived, they met a man on the street with a knife.
He did not comply with the request to release the knife and continued to walk away.
An officer placed an energy weapon against the man, and when that was ineffective, a less lethal firearm was fired.
The man was hit and dropped the knife and was detained.
He was taken to hospital but was not seriously injured.
The SIU’s mandate was called because a police officer fired a less lethal rifle, which is classified as a firearm.
One investigator and one forensic scientist have been appointed in the case.
At this point, two witnesses and one subject have been identified.
