Police in British Columbia say an episode involving a vehicle in front of a mosque, dubbed an “embarrassing incident” against the Muslim community, is not a racially motivated hate crime.
A press release from the RCMP in Surrey on Saturday said the two suspects were teenagers who belonged to the Muslim community and were cooperating in the investigation.
The RCMP received a report Wednesday night alleging that someone in a moving vehicle threw water at three pedestrians and minutes later the car went off the road and nearly hit one of the people walking.
The National Council of Canadian Muslims, the Muslim Association of British Columbia, said it was “seriously concerned”.
Police say the next steps to resolve the issue could include the British Columbia Attorney’s Office or an out-of-court restorative justice approach that “will allow all parties to come together and express the impact this incident has had on them and the greater community ’.
Assistant Commissioner Brian Edwards of the RCMP in Surrey says the incident shows how important it is to report all police disruptions so they can be fully investigated.
