Amid ongoing hostilities between Disney and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, his fellow Arkansas Gov. weighed in on Sunday, criticizing what he saw as a “punitive approach to business.”

“First, Disney did very poorly,” Gov. Asa Hutchinson began, appearing on CNN’s State of the Union. He first criticized Disney’s stance on new state parental rights legislation, dubbed by critics as the Don’t Say Gay bill. The bill bans classroom discussions on sexual orientation and gender identity for elementary school students from kindergarten to third grade.

“Secondly, the law that was passed, in my opinion, is common sense that in these classes, these lower classes, you should not teach sexual orientation and those issues that should not be covered – at this age.” Hutchinson, who has been the Republican governor of Arkansas since 2015, said.

However, he quickly turned to adding blame to DeSantis for signing legislation last month, depriving Walt Disney World of a decade-long special agreement that allowed the theme park to run itself.

“But I don’t believe the government should punish private business because we don’t agree with them. That’s not the right approach either,” Hutchinson said. “So, for me, this is the old republican principle of restrained government.”

“Let’s do the right thing,” he said. This is a fair debate on these special tax privileges. I understand this debate. But let’s not persecute businesses and punish them because we don’t agree with what they say. ”

CNN presenter Dana Bash pressed, “So DeSantis has exceeded?”

“Well, I don’t agree with that,” Hutchinson said. “I do not agree with the criminal approach to business.”
