Netflix has turned down Megan Markle’s animated series as part of a wave of layoffs caused by a decline in streaming subscribers.
Pearl, the working title of the Markle-created show, has been officially canceled, Deadline reported on Sunday.
The show, which was created by the Duchess of Sussex through Archewell Productions, was still under development.
Markle and Prince Harry created Archewell Productions in the fall of 2020 in an attempt to create screenplay series, documentaries, documentaries, feature films and children’s programs. Pearl was expected to be the first animated series created by the production company.
Despite Pearl’s refusal, insiders say Netflix remains optimistic about the deal with Archewell and has a number of projects planned, including a documentary series called Heart of Invictus, which follows the latest Invictus games.

Netflix has made several cuts in recent days, including the suspension of two other children’s shows and the dismissal of staff.
Last week, the streaming service scribbled Dino Daycare, created by Jeff King, and the South Asian-inspired adventure Boons and Curses. Both shows were already in production.
Sources familiar with the cancellation told Deadline that Netflix had warned producers to undertake projects that are still under development elsewhere.
It is unclear whether they offered such advice to Archewell Productions.
The streaming giant paid $ 100 million in a deal with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in September 2020.
So far, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have not yet created any published content for the streaming giant. But the company hopes their upcoming series, documenting the latest Invictus Games, will prove worth the money.

Markle announced the already canceled program last July. She took on the role of “creator and executive producer” – this was the first time the former actress and star of “Costumes” will work in the position of EP.
Director David Furnish, the husband of musician Elton John, was also expected to serve as the show’s executive producer.
Markle said Pearl would “intertwine fantasy and history” as he focused on “the adventures of a 12-year-old girl” as he tried to “overcome the daily challenges of life.”
Although few details have been released about the series, many believed the show was based – at least in part – on Markle’s own childhood, citing how she named the show and its title character Pearl, the meaning of the origin of her name.
The name Megan comes from Wales, where Megan is traditionally spelled, but originally comes from the Greek name Margaret, derived from the word margaritēs, which translates as “pearl”.
This was not the first time Pearl had seemingly chosen to draw on his own life as inspiration for his professional projects, something he had done most recently with his debut children’s book, The Bench, which was widely criticized by readers on both sides. Atlantic.

Following the news that it lost 200,000 subscribers, its shares fell by 25%. So far this year, its shares have fallen by about 40% after markets shook in January when they said subscriber growth would slow significantly in 2022.
Netflix closed at $ 190.36 per share on Friday
Netflix also began firing staff after missing its target of 200,000 subscribers and watching its stock fall by 50 percent in one month.
The company made the cuts in Tudum, a website full of stories designed to launch Netflix programs, it was revealed on Thursday. At least 10-15 employees tweeted that they had been fired, although the exact number fired was unclear.
The site, called Sound Imitation for the sound you hear when a Netflix show starts, was designed to give subscribers internal access to the company’s broadcasts.
Netflix declined to tell the Los Angeles Times how many jobs had been cut, saying simply that “our fan website Tudum is an important priority for the company.”
Some of the fired people took to Twitter, saying the company had hired them only months earlier.
There have been several hypotheses as to why the streamer is losing his eyes, and many of them, including Tesla’s chief executive (and potential future Twitter boss) Elon Musk, blame the “awakened mind virus.”
Responding to a tweet about the devastating performance of the subscription service, Musk said: “The vigilant virus makes Netflix invisible.”
One follower then replied, “The virus of the waking mind is the greatest threat to civilization.”
The richest man in the world replied, “Yes.”
Fans applauded Musk’s comments, with some even calling for him to take over Netflix after concluding his deal on Twitter.
However, others suggest that the real problem is Netflix’s habit of canceling favorite shows ahead of time, angering fans.
Popular TV dramas such as The OA, Marco Polo and The Punisher are canceled after the second series – leaving fans furious and threatening to cancel their subscriptions because they no longer want to “invest their time in the series” due to fears that it will be “Killed.”
Netflix is shutting down its own broadcasts earlier than ever and this is thought to be one of the main reasons the platform is rapidly losing subscribers, according to a new analysis
The streaming giant is canceling many of its own TV series, as new data reveals that less than one in five original shows launched in 2017 has reached its third season – compared to just 31% in 2015.
Meanwhile, more than half of Netflix’s own reality shows and dramas released in 2018 have not been commissioned for a second series, compared to more than a third launched in 2017 and 28 percent in 2016, according to The Times.
This comes as streaming lost 200,000 subscribers in just three months, while the US company’s shareholders were warned to expect another two million subscribers to leave in the three months to July.
The bosses say the second rise in prices in a year played a role, as the company lost 700,000 after its decision to withdraw from Russia as a result of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
Netflix said the Covid boom had “made a lot of noise” and blamed the delay in returning to normalcy after two years of blocking.
He also accused the sharing of passwords about the growth of canceled accounts, as he estimated that about 10 million households around the world watch his service for free, using the account of a friend or other family member.
Now the company has begun testing different ways to restrict password sharing in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru – and could expand elsewhere if successful. The bosses are also considering turning the service into a low-fee subscription supported by ads.

Netflix also claims that the market has already been “saturated” by growing competition from streaming services, including Disney +, Apple TV, Now TV, Warner Bros Discovery and Paramount, the cost of living crisis in the US, Canada and Western Europe. and its decision to stop streaming in Russia following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in February.
The rapid growth of the Disney + competitor, in which billions of dollars have been invested in recent years, has increased the competition in the streaming market dramatically.
Other services such as Amazon Prime Video, which has captured a share of the UK live football market, and AppleTV +, which was a success with football comedy Ted Lasso, have also seen people deviate from Netflix.
Despite recent streams of streaming service, there have been some successes, with the anti-utopian Korean series Squid Game proving to be a huge hit and the first season of the periodic drama Bridgerton taking the world by storm.
However, fans’ favorites such as Bloodline and Jessica Jones were canceled after their third season, leaving viewers disappointed and “tired of starting something new just to be canceled two years later”.
