Trump stumbles over Nebraska candidate accused of groping: “I defend people when I know they’re good”

Former President Trump fell on Sunday for Nebraska Gov. Charles Herbster, who has been accused by many women of sexual abuse.

Trump has doubled his support for the candidate since the allegations surfaced last week, and offered a strong defense to Herbster on Sunday.

“He was badly abused and that’s unfortunate. That’s why I came here, “the former president told Herbster. “I protect people when I know they are good. He is a good person.”

“I have to protect my friends. “I have to protect people who are good,” Trump said. “He has been my friend for 30 years. He is the most innocent human being. He is the last person to do any of these things and even the things they accuse him of. What did they say? He’s talking to someone. He was talking. What you did is a disgrace. ”

During the rally, Trump invited Herbster to join him on stage, calling him someone who had been unfairly “driven through a mill.”

The candidate spoke briefly, praising Trump’s work during his post, including his appointments to the Supreme Court and the relocation of the US embassy in Jerusalem.

“The primary election, as you know, is on May 10, and I think Charles will do very well,” Trump said after Herbster left the scene.

Herbster is a businessman who previously participated in Trump’s campaigns and advised the former president on agriculture.

Outgoing Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts (R) called the allegations against Herbster “beyond terrible” and backed Nebraska University Regent Jim Pilen in the primary.

Eight women have accused Herbster of sexual misconduct, including State Senator Julie Slam (R), who said he lifted her skirt and touched her inappropriately in 2019, according to The Nebraska Examiner.

Following the publication of the allegations, one of Herbster’s other alleged victims, Elizabeth Todson, made public her allegations after she was first included as an anonymous prosecutor in the report.

“I have struggled for years with the experience I had with Charles W. Herbster. At a political event in 2019, Herbster touched me sexually as he greeted my table. That was the night Herbster aggressively grabbed Senator Julie Slam, “Todson said, adding that leaving was an” extremely difficult “decision for fear of repercussions.

“But after thinking about it for years, I know it’s time for the people of Nebraska to find out about the horrific acts of Charles W. Herbster,” she added.

The gubernatorial candidate denied the allegations and called the report “a ridiculous, unjustifiably dirty political trick.”

Trump, meanwhile, has faced his own allegations of sexual misconduct, including by writer E. Jean Carroll, who accused him of assaulting her in the department store locker room. He has also been accused of sexual assault by beauty pageants, journalists and a contestant on The Apprentice.
