LOS ANGELES – May is the month of the heritage of the Asian-American Pacific islanders.

The Sino-American Museum at the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument is the first and only museum in Southern California dedicated to sharing the history of the Sino-American experience in Los Angeles.

Opened in December 2003, the museum is the site of the original Chinatown of Los Angeles, reflecting the development of immigrant history that began more than 150 years ago, when the first major Chinese settlement was documented in Los Angeles.

In the years since its opening, Sino-American families and businesses have donated their valuables to the museum. CAM received artifacts ranging from antique furniture and toys, through furniture and supplies for herbal shops, to traditional wedding dresses. Delicate, faded photos and yellowed letters from relatives in China were entrusted to museum staff. Older Chinese Americans shared their memories of growing up in the Old Chinatown, which were recorded on audiocassettes.

The grand opening of the museum was made possible by the generous support of the City of Los Angeles, the historic monument of El Pueblo de Los Angeles, community organizations, public and private donors and countless donors, contributors and volunteers.
