Canada-US border: A drone carrying weapons found in a tree

On Friday morning, the Lambton OPP, with the help of the St. Clair Fire Department, used a bucket truck to retrieve a large drone from a tree on the banks of the St. Clair River – a bag containing 11 pistols was attached.

The tree was in a property belonging to Christine and Jeremy Aquwood.

“Our neighbor had spotted someone in our yard in the middle of the night and he had a remote,” Christine explained. “He wasn’t sure what was going on.”

Then things became very interesting. The stranger in the yard was frightened by Ackwood’s neighbor, and then the stranger lost control of the drone and crashed into a large tree in Ackwood’s backyard.

The drone pilot then rushed in, jumped into a waiting vehicle and took off.

At the time, the Aquwoods were actually on a trip to Las Vegas. Jeremy Aquwood says they only found out after contacting police.

“We were not sure if they had done it before. The police never told us that, but we were curious if they knew – if they noticed that we were absent, “he said.

The Lambton OPP believe the drone and weapons traveled across the St. Clair River from the United States and ended up at the Ackwood property near Port Lambton, Ont.

“You know that between Canada and the United States and the various law enforcement agencies, they will have to think about it,” said Chris Lewis, a CTV public safety analyst and former OPP commissioner. “Because, let’s face it, there can be far more dangerous things than guns moving back and forth if they want to.”

The drones were used for other illegal activities. In December 2020, the Middlesex OPP and London police thwarted attempts to smuggle drugs into the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Center.

Lewis cites other similar examples, saying: “Even pens in the Kingston area [penitentiary] I’ve had some attempts at this and so, you know, it’s going to get worse before it gets better. “

The Lambton OPP says the investigation is ongoing.
