A badger has been spotted roaming neighborhoods in Vernon’s BX neighborhood.
Brody Dranchuk shared a photo of a healthy-looking badger at the Vernon & Area Community Forum.
The animal was seen running along a fence in the Gibbs Road area near Cools Pond.
“Be careful with your pets and children,” Dranchuk wrote, adding that he had called the badgers.bc.ca hotline.
Badgers are a species on the red list of BC
They are one of the largest members of the weasel family and can weigh from 6 to 14 kilograms, reaching a length of 65-90 centimeters.
They are known for their fearless nature and can make a great enemy for any pet who is not lucky enough to meet one.
The badger is at risk in BC due to habitat loss.
According to the Okanagan Similkamin Society, only about 250 badgers remain in the province, “and there may be only about 25-30 badgers left in the entire Okanagan.”
Badgers are predators and can be valuable in controlling rodent populations.
Rotating creatures usually mate in July or August, with young born around April. The litters range from one to four sets.
Abandoned badger holes provide important nesting sites for other wildlife, such as burrowing owls.
If you see a badger in an urban area, you can report it to badgers.bc.ca.
