Eddie Joyce insists on apology, accuses Commissioner for Legislative Standards of Conflict of Interest in HoA

Independent MHA Eddie Joyce retaliated after a recommendation was made that he be removed from the House of Commons until he provided the necessary financial disclosure to fulfill his duty on conflict of interest provisions.

Legislative Standards Commissioner Bruce Chaulk called for Joyce’s suspension in a report submitted to the legislature last month. Chaulk accused Joyce of “repeatedly and deliberately” refusing to provide the requested information.

Joyce claims to have provided the requested information and spoke on the matter at a privilege point in the House today. “I don’t have a job,” Joyce said.

He apologized to Chaulk, with whom he has a complicated history. He turned the table, accusing Chaulk of a conflict of interest.

Joyce says Chaulk is a defendant in a civil lawsuit filed by Joyce in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador, and that he is under investigation for breach of confidentiality.

MHA Paul Lane expresses support for Joyce

Independent MHA for Mount Pearl Southlands Paul Lane backed Joyce on the privilege point.

“The tail seems to be waving the dog,” Lane said in front of the House, “and when I hear all these inaccuracies that this member raises many times… we just raise our hand in the air and say, ‘Oh, well, that’s it.'”
