A Calgary man is facing several charges after a Chestermere peace officer allegedly caught him driving more than twice the speed limit at the west end of the city last week.
The employee noticed the exceedance while observing the traffic in block 23500 on Range Road 284 around 6:10 pm on April 29.
Chestermere municipal officials say the radar confirmed that the vehicle was moving at about 199km / h before reaching a top speed of 205km / h in an area where the limit was 80km / h.
“The vehicle recklessly overtook other vehicles heading north, completely ignoring the safety of other road users,” a press release said Monday.
The officer stopped the driver, who said he was “just testing his new exhaust system”, according to officials.
“Traveling at these speeds is outrageous,” said a sergeant. Trevor Bowman in a news release. “This not only shows the blatant disregard for their own safety, but also for other members of society.
“It could have ended so tragically in a split second for someone who had just returned home on Friday afternoon.
The man, whose name was not released, is due to appear in a provincial court in July.
