A black bear hanging from a tree near a school in Wakaville, California, on Monday temporarily closed roads in the area as people were asked to give space to the animal, officials said.
Vacaville Police Department first posted a signal on Facebook early Monday, warning the public about a black bear in block 200 on North Orchard Avenue.
A video posted online shows the adorable animal in a tree, but police told people to stay away.
“If you see a bear, the surest course of action would be to avoid it, keep doors and windows closed, and consider bringing pets inside,” police said.
Officers guarded the bear as students entered the nearby Willis Jepson High School while the school’s three back entrances were closed.
Some roads were also temporarily closed, including Hemlock Street between North Orchard and Fir Street. In addition, only minimal traffic was allowed in North Orchard.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife told KCRA that “the bear relaxes and shows no signs of aggression.” Authorities plan to leave the bear in the area overnight, hoping to leave on its own. If not, officials will reassure him and relocate him, KCRA said.
At 4:40 p.m., police said all roads were reopened.
“Although we do not find bears in Vacaville every day, this is not uncommon,” police said. “Remember that the safest meeting with a bear is the one we prevent – please do not look for the bear for curiosity, photos or selfies. Bring these trash cans after you pick them up.
